Happy Chinese New Year ~ Gong Xi Fa Cai

Thursday, February 3, 2011

Following Chinese Zodiac tradition, 2011 is Year of the Rabbit, starting today, February 3.  Having had the opportunity to live in Hong Kong as a child, celebrating this holiday is not only nostalgic for me, but a reminder of well wishes, bright color, and good fortune for all.  Click here to read my previous post on Rabbit & Bunny symbolic imagery.

During Chinese New Year, Red Envelopes, known as Hong Bao are giving to children with money and/or chocolate treats inside.  The envelopes represent prosperity, longevity, and good fortune.

Tangerine Trees are ever present during Chinese New Year, symbolizing abundance & good fortune.

Hong Kong Harbor ~ A spectacular fireworks display is annually held in celebration of Chinese New Year.
