Joan & Jayne Michaels

The interior design work of 2Michaels, a firm owned by twin sisters Joan and Jayne Michaels, continues to be highlighted in various design forums.  I first got a look into their own apartments back in the Fall when New York Social Diary featured the interiors of each sister's NYC dwelling and a revealing question & answer conversation about their lives thus far.  The Spring 2011 premiere issue of TRAD Home tapped 2Michaels as one of their "20 New Traditional Designers to Watch", and showcased one of their client's home -- a San Diego, CA house filled with fine Mexican art and treasured goods.  And in today's NY Times Home section, Joan & Jayne offer up their chic suggestions for perfect Summer House furnishings....  not only keeping in mind style, but the importance of comfort & function.  Check out more below.

All Aboard! David Netto + Family Travel By Rail

David Netto with wife Elizabeth and their daughter Madelyn

An article in The Wall Street Journal offers an alternative to air & car excursion with a refreshingly fun railroad travel tale, written by designer David Netto.  Netto explains that he was won over with traveling by train after winter weather in Chicago caused him major delays in returning home to Los Angeles.  In a split decision, he booked a private room on the next Amtrak train leaving the Windy City bound for sunny LA -- and the adventure forever changed him.  Netto's WSJ article includes the do's & don'ts to navigating a successful & comfortable cross country rail ride -- cabin selection, food options, etc -- as well as pointing out the green benefits of leaving the planes & cars behind.  His favorite travel routes include:  The Silver Meteor > from NY to Charleston, SC; The Coast Starlight > from LA. to Oregon or Washington; and The Lake Shore Limited > from Chicago to NY.

I have kept the images of Netto's Silver Lake home in LA, published in Vogue magazine from 2008.  The 1961 mid century modern home was designed by renowned architect Richard Neutra. Netto's choice of furnishings and finishes not only continue in the original style vein of this iconic home design, but also blend skillfully a refreshed contemporary sensibility.  Check out below....

New Find >>> The Crangi Family Project

Celerie Kemble, Deborah Needleman, & Lela Rose (L to R)

While reading through New York Social Diary's latest entries from last week's parties & fundraisers, I loved reading about Wall Street Journal editor Deborah Needleman hosting a party at The High Line for "Off Duty", WSJ's weekend lifestyle section.  Needleman is the former editor of the much loved & dearly missed shelter magazine Domino, so of course, some of her very fashionable friends turned out to support & attend.  Guests included Tory Burch, Celerie Kemble, Lela Rose, and Jenna Lyons.... all looking summery & stylish in NYSD's photos from the event.  Pictured with Jenna Lyons (president & creative director of J. Crew), is a woman (rockin' a pair of Gloria Steinem style glasses) whose name I didn't recognize, Courtney Crangi.  Through a quick Google search, I have discovered a new find -- Courtney's chic family run jewelry line, Philip Crangi Jewerly and her NYC storefront The Crangi Family Project.

Courtney, together with her brother Philip (a RISD graduate), established Philip Crangi Jewelry, launching their first collection of fine pieces in 2001.  Courtney not only holds the position as CEO of the company, but serves as part muse for her brother's designs.  The collection can be purchased at Bergdorf Goodman, and their more seasonal line, Giles & Brother, can be found online and is sold at The Crangi Family Project.

One King's Lane is offering 4 different packages that include attending upcoming private parties, participating in "Chef For A Day" -- cooking in the kitchen of Chez Panisse, as well as being a guest at the 40th anniversary dinner on August 27.

$25,000 -- Patron Package
$50,000 -- Champion Package
$100,000 -- The Insider Package

Exterior of Chez Panisse

Chez Panisse was established in 1971 by revered chef Alice Waters, with a desire to cook & serve food that was in season and grown locally.  Ms. Waters continues to be outspoken about supporting local farmers and choosing to eat foods when they are at their best.  She is leading the charge in emphasizing the importance of gardening in all our lives....  the joy & satisfaction of eating straight from your home garden, as well as the unlimited learning possibilities for children who are growing fruits & veggies in school yard gardens across the country. Through Ms. Waters' efforts, Michelle Obama took notice and established a vegetable garden on the lawn of the White House.

I feel lucky to say that I have had the opportunity to dine at Chez Panisse and it is definitely worth a visit if you should find yourself in the San Francisco/Berkeley area....  In fact, Open Table states that there is a table for 2 available at 9:15 tonight. A must stop is also Ms. Waters' lovely & quaint breakfast/lunch cafe, Cafe Fanny, named for her daughter.  On our visit, the cappucinno, homemade granola, and soft farm eggs on thick slices of artsian bread was unbeliveable.

Diane Keaton's New Tabletop Collection

Thursday, June 23, 2011

Diane Keaton

Actress Diane Keaton has partnered with Bed, Bath, & Beyond, launching her new tabletop top collection fittingly title K by Keaton.  Typically one to focus her design eye on residential projects, Ms. Keaton's custom collection connects her passion for stylish living with functional entertaining.  Her plates, bowls, and mugs take influence from her surroundings through her choice of muted colors, decorative details, & attention to form.  Ms. Keaton also credits Catalina pottery as a design inspiration, for its durability & simple line.  The Architectural Digest November 2008 issue featured Ms. Keaton's Spanish style home in Beverly Hills built in the early 1920s. Check out the photos below and note the similar design details expressed in both the interiors & K by Keaton -- the decorative additon of words/letters and a chosen color palate of earth tones, both seamlessly layered with period style.  Click here to read more from a conversation with the NY Times.
