Images Shelter Co. Facebook

Included in both my October '12 issue of Vogue magazine & the New York Times Magazine Travel Fall 2012, are articles featuring the boutique camping experience crafted by Shelter Co.. This San Francisco based company founded by husband and wife Mike & Kelsey Sheofsky, along with their partners, are an experienced team of designers & event planners, who collectively work together to create a very personal & unique campsite for couples or large groups. Full disclosure, I'm not much of a camper, but I could get use to the amenities Shelter Co. provides in their camping packages -- an actual full size mattress dressed with 400 thread count sheets, down comforter, bedside tables, lounge chairs, s'mores fixins, games, etc... -- they've thought about every detail needed to enjoy a truly comfortable & memorable outdoor experience.

Back in the Day Bakery

Monday, September 24, 2012

I have a soft spot for really good (I mean really good) homemade baked goods, and of course, they have to be paired with a great coffee. We were craving a sweet treat and Back in the Day Bakery turned out to be a delicious discovery while out & about in Savannah, GA. We sampled their cookies, old fashioned style cupcakes, and fresh baked bread....  All extremely tasty (particularly the Lavender cookie) and our cappuccino was perfect! Side note -- the owner is allergic to nuts, so you won't find any Peanut Butter, Pecan, or Walnut variety cookies baked in their kitchen.....

Classic Beach House Porch

Hey Y'all.........     This past week was spent along the GA coast, in search of interesting items to be featured on my One Kings Lane + Vintage & Market Finds page. The bonus of this trip was getting the chance to see & visit with a dear college friend, who graciously offered us her beach house as our base. Living near the water, if only for a short time, reminds me of how much I love the seaside lifestyle and particularly the way classic architecture immediately sets the tone for ease & comfort, and as always, sandy feet allowed.

My friend's beach house was built in the 1930s/40s, and yet feels completely contemporary in design. The exterior is unassuming, and in fact, the home appears alot smaller than it really is. The interior is essentially a square shape with kitchen/dining/guest room & full bath on the ground floor and living/3 bedrooms/1 & 1/2 baths upstairs. I became completely smitten with the covered screened porches, on both the ground & upstairs level, that run from the front to the back of the house. The expansive porch provides a relaxing spot to enjoy the sights & sounds of the ocean beyond the lush landscape while allowing some sense of privacy from neighbors. Clearly, the design of this mutli-functional space accommodates extra room for entertaining needs or sleeping quarters for guests. Details to note, the deep metal awning fastened along the exterior shields the porch from the harsh afternoon sun and any rain from soaking the floors and furniture. Ceiling fans mounted onto original beadboard and the addition of mix & match pieces of vintage style furnishings (in a clean shade of white paint and upholstered in blue toned indoor/outdoor fabrics) keeps the space cool & inviting.

Carolina Herrera, Jr. in the Spanish Countryside

Thursday, September 13, 2012

Carolina Herrera, Jr.

The October '12 issue of Elle Decor magazine features the city home of Madrid based Carolina Herrera, Jr. Herrera, Jr. is responsible for the interior design of the apartment, expertly mixing pattern & color with both found pieces and furnishings with a rich provenance. Her refined eye & design skill is influenced through her global upbringing and passed down through family, her mother (and namesake) is the legendary women's fashion designer, Carolina Herrera.

I have held onto the images from Vogue Living 2008, of Herrera, Jr.'s country home, a 3,500 acre estate in the Extremadura region of Spain. Herrera, Jr. takes the lead with the design of the home's interiors, layering bright color textiles with both fine & primitive furnishings and accessories....  Photos below....

Random Household Tip.....

Wednesday, September 12, 2012

We have a front loading washer & dryer, which has seen its fair share of laundry duty....  Recently, the washer started to have a subtle musty smell to the interior. Following a brief panic that our relatively new machine was on the fritz, I Googled "front loading washer smell" and came up with multiple pages on the topic!

Fortunately, this funky smell problem is common with front loading washers....  Recommended solutions for ridding your machine of this odor include keeping the door open to air out the interior when not in use, wipe down the interior & rubber circular lining for any excess water/debris, and every month or so run your machine with a specific machine washing product. My local grocery carried the brand affresh, a tablet that you place in the machine, and set to a wash cycle, but an alternate product suggested is to use White Vinegar.

I have since tried both methods, and have to say, the Vinegar did the better job....  Pour into the detergent compartment (use the same amount as you would detergent), and run on the hottest cycle. I've done this process twice over the last 2 months, and it completely makes a difference.

The Bakery at Cakes & Ale

Monday, September 10, 2012

Image Cakes & Ale Facebook

I mentioned in a post from back in July about how my secret spot for lunch is The Bakery at Cakes & Ale in Decatur, GA. Since then, I have been back 3 times to enjoy their Sunday Brunch, and now probably have a slight obsession with the place! What makes this sweet cafe so wonderful in my book are a couple of key factors -- savory food set a great price point, a knowledgeable & courteous staff, and the ability to dine on a weekend without a 30+ minute wait for a table.

We returned yesterday for Brunch, and as always, completely smitten with Cakes & Ale's fresh in-season ever changing menu....  We both started with cappuccino and split one of their buttery croissants served with homemade preserves. I ordered the Open Face BLT complete with Jalapeno Mayo, Fresh Arugula and a Poached Egg on top, Mr. Ferguson opted for the cheesy & creamy goodness of the Croque Monsieur.....  Over The Top Delicious!!

Peter Sarsgaard & RSRV Channel

Peter Sarsgaard

Actor Peter Sarsgaard is featured on a recent episode of Dr. Frank Lipman's online series, Be Well Week; Be Well Weekend, featured on RSRV Channel. The topic for discussion is how Sarsgaard turned to Dr. Lipman over 2 years ago, not only looking to shed some pounds, but reconnect with an overall healthier lifestyle. In an effort to pin point certain foods causing negative reactions within his body, Dr. Lipman recommended Sarsgaard follow his elimination diet, removing caffeine, dairy, gluten, alcohol, sugar, soy, corn, & cigarettes from his daily diet. Within in a matter of weeks, Sarsgaard found himself losing weight and surge in energy, while also recognizing certain foods that seemed to rule his life.

Two plus years later, Sarsgaard maintains a clean diet, complete with his homemade smoothies, and is an active runner, running sometimes 60 miles a week....  I noticed him recently photographed running in the streets of NYC, looking pretty lean and toned....  Watch the 2 attached videos below to learn more from Dr. Lipman and Sarsgaard's personal journey.

Exterior Wall Garden at the Entrance of Terrain

Terrain is a recently opened store in Westport, CT expertly blending stylish home & garden elements, and offering an overall shopping experience unlike anything I have encountered before.... Occupying a structure that was an original Cadillac dealership, Terrain has repurposed & redesigned a vast indoor/outdoor space into lush & extensive exterior gardens, with an interior space showcasing nature inspired decorative accessories, bath & beauty products, landscape needs, plus cafe and coffee bar. The folks at Anthropologie, the always chic & interesting clothing company, are behind this forward thinking retail & culinary partnership. My photos from our visit below....

VAY-CAY Wrap Up....

Monday, September 3, 2012

Well hello again....  I've spent the better part of August visiting with family & friends in Connecticut, while also getting the opportunity to try some new restaurants (at least new to me) and one fabulous recently opened retail shop (in which I took so many photos of the interior, it will have its own post!). I hope my handy dandy iPhone pictures help to map out my journey....

Upon landing at the Westchester County Airport, in White Plains, NY (which makes flying in a breeze due to its small scale), and heading home, our first must-stop was to Lakeside Diner in Stamford, CT. How many times have we driven up & down the Merritt Parkway and never knew that this original little jem existed right off Exit 34, and overlooking a quaint picturesque lake! I found out about Lakeside Diner through listening to Jane & Michael Stern on The Splendid Table, just a few weeks back. The pair PRAISED the donuts & pancakes, so, of course, that is what we ordered (in addition to omelets & hash-browns), and took a dozen donuts home with us for everyone else to try!

My family's lakehouse in the NW corner of Connecticut played host to a 4 day weekend with a group of dear college friends, (above)....

Upon my return, my next must-stop was to Terrain in Westport, CT. Terrain is to gardeners what Disneyland is to kids!! An UNBELIEVABLE home/garden experience, complete with cafe & coffee bar....  Stay tuned for my next post on more details of this fabulous shopping experience!

The week was filled with foodie stops to.....

Le Farm -- a wonderful & charming farm-to-table restaurant that to my surprise has been delighting diners with their fresh "in-season" dishes for the last 3 years....  Our dinner was impeccable....  Food & service absolutely perfect!

Lunch with my nieces & nephews at Shake Shack....  complete with burgers, fries, and milkshakes!

My first time to local neighborhood restaurant, Osianna, that served up fresh Mediterranean style fare....  Favorite spotting of the night, a fresh cut flower bouquet accented in our wine ice bucket -- Brilliant Idea!

Additional stops to....  A farm stand, (above)......  and a visit to the Saugatuck Rowing Club, (below).....

And finally, most nights were spent on the beach for wine, cheese, and sunset....  To get to our favorite beach (above), you pass by this house (below), which you might recognize from the feature in the August 2012 issue of Architectural Digest magazine....
