Downsize to Upcycle

After - side elevation
Image NYT

Today's NY Times Home Section features a Raleigh, NC based family who downsized from their 3200sq ft home to a more manageable 1300 sq ft residence (photo above). In the process, this family of 4 saw their property taxes cut in half, while also making the deliberate decision to upcycle the original footprint of existing dilapidated ranch style home, located around the corner from their previous one.

Local architecture firm Richard Hall Designs transformed the one story structure into a shining example of well planned contemporary architecture. The NY Times includes "after" photos of the space, but Richard Hall Designs' Facebook page has a couple of "before"....  check out below.

The Twilight Saga Comes to a Close

Thursday, November 15, 2012

Breaking Dawn, Part 2, the 5th and final movie to the 4 part Twilight book series, opens tonight at midnight....  Theaters are also hosting marathons of the 4 previous films leading up to the November 16 release. Confession, I am a fan, having read all the books, and seen the movies. Although, I really didn't understand what all the hubbub was about when Twilight first broke on the scene. I didn't even see the first movie until it came out on On Demand and wasn't planning on reading the books, until I had a trip planned and I was looking for something to read on the plane....

Robert Pattinson (Edward), Elizabeth Reaser (Esme), Kellan Lutz (Emmett), Peter Facinelli (Dr. Cullen), Nikki Reed (Rosalie), Kristen Stewart (Bella), Ashley Greene (Alice), Jackson Rathbone (Jasper), Cam Gigandet, Edi Gathegi (Laurent), Taylor Lautner (Jacob), and Rachelle Lefevre (Victoria).

I wish we could go back to 2008, right before the flood gates opened and Twilight catapulted to super stardom.....  And when photographer Peggy Sirota shot photos of the cast (above) for Vanity Fair, all of whom seem so fresh faced & carefree, and probably (most certainly) having no idea of how their lives were about to drastically change....  Read the VF feature here.

John Derian in his Provincetown, MA Kitchen

Since establishing his company in 1989, New York City based artisan John Derian has earned well deserved success within the home decor market. His name is almost synonymous with decoupage style, a technique that Derian has applied to otherwise everyday home accessories....  Paperweights, bowls, dishes, platters (etc..) are transformed into unique pieces with interesting vintage imagery of animals, flowers, sea life, detailed patterns, hand lettering, and more. Watch the video attached below for additional insight....

The NY Times recently featured the interior design of Derian's East Village Studio, which I highlighted in a previous post....  Derian also owns a 18th century seaside home in Provincetown, MA, that is a stellar example of his innate design eye and honed editing skills, particularly with decorative accessories. Photos below include interior shots, taking note of various objects reworked throughout the home.

Living Room -- The Mantel (below) with a portrait painting, and then that same painting finds a home above a bathroom sink.

Casual Seating Area -- Pillows and linens switched out (below), as well as a different round table but still accessorized with the same/additional objects.

Guest Room -- Bedding and end table are reworked (below).

Decorative Mirror finds a home over a mix of vintage furnishings.

Decatur >>> Little Free Library

Tuesday, November 13, 2012

I've mentioned the Little Free Library inconspicuously nestled into the Decatur neighborhood near us in a previous post....  Well, be on the lookout for spotting more of these charming book swapping pitched roof structures around town. About a dozen Little Free Libraries designed by Decatur area artists, were auctioned off as part of the Decatur Book Festival back in early September. We noticed the one I photographed (above) right outside Dancing Goats Coffee Bar on Ponce....  And 2 more have been posted, one in front of City Hall and another in Oakhurst's Harmony Park.

Lincoln

Friday, November 9, 2012

Front page of today's NY Times Weekend Arts section includes a glowing review of Steven Spielberg's latest work Lincoln, starring the dynamic Academy Award winning actor Daniel Day-Lewis. The film opens in New York & Los Angeles today (11/9) and in theaters everywhere November 16....  Watch the trailer attached below....

I turned up a vintage needlepoint of Abraham Lincoln on my travels not too long ago....  I was immediately drawn to the color details & craftsmanship of the piece. I have it posted in my Etsy Shop if interested and please email with any questions....

Sample Sale >>> Madeline Weinrib

Thursday, November 8, 2012

Textile designer Madeline Weinrib's Sample Sale ad in today's NY Times mentions that they are extending the sale, to be held Friday 11/9 through Sunday 11/11. This announcement is in part to accommodate interested shoppers in the Tri-State area who were unable to attend the previous scheduled dates due to Hurricane Sandy. Pillows, Carpets, Furniture, and Fabric by the Yard will be offered at up to 70% off retail prices. Weinriba native New Yorker, will be donating 10% of the sale's proceeds to the Red Cross to benefit those affected by the storm.

Architect >>> Anna Evans

Wednesday, November 7, 2012

Birmingham, AL based architect Anna Evans transformed a detached (and dilapidated) 2 car garage on her existing property into a office studio/guest quarters. She took to reworking the original floor plan to accommodate her work & living needs, while being mindful of her neighborhood's building codes when adding additional square footage to the design. Southern Living magazine's June 2012 issue featured Anna's completed project.... Included below are before & after photos, with additional detailed images from her firm's Facebook page....
