Armour & Co.

Wednesday, March 27, 2013

So, this sign (pictured above) made me sad to see posted....  Armour & Co., located in the VA-Highland neighborhood and sitting prominently at the corner of N. Highland & Amsterdam Avenues, is a home furnishings boutique known for a refined sophisticated style. I stopped in this afternoon and spoke to owner Jayme Armour Leffler, who mentioned that Sunday will be their last day of business and now until then, everything in the store is 50% off.

I've written about Jayme twice before....  in the Spring of 2010, I included photos of her Decatur bungalow that Better Homes & Gardens featured in their May 2010 issue and in the Summer of 2011, I attended designer Marla Henderson's trunkshow of her vintage rugs & textiles, hosted by Jayme at Armour & Co.

Below are photos I took this afternoon of the current interior of Armour & Co., followed by images that The Atlanta Journal-Constitution featured of Jayme's home in 2009.

Pak Heydt

Tuesday, March 26, 2013

On my drive to a client's house on the westside of Atlanta, I take E. Rock Springs Road, a direct E/W thoroughfare that eventually becomes Rock Springs Road, where I then pick up the I-85 access to I-75 North to Moores Mill.

Along the stretch of Rock Springs you border a couple of different neighborhoods -- Morningside, Ansley Park, and Piedmont Heights.... The road is wide and the original bungalow homes were built on larger lots. Cut to today's living needs, and these houses have become ripe for redevelopment.....  And I noticed recently a couple of side by side lots had been cleared of their original structures and a sign posted on the property announcing the upcoming build of Rock Springs Manor, offering 7 custom homes.

The good news is that homes in Rock Springs Manor are designed by local Atlanta architecture firm, Pak Heydt. Yong Pak and his partner Charles Heydt are responsible for some really great homes found throughout the area. The firm designs both new homes and the renovation of original structures, and I appreciate their work because they don't just necessarily build BIG houses -- they strive for attention to detail and recognize the value of craftsmanship....  photos of Pak Heydt's work below....

ON the MARKET

Monday, March 25, 2013

Actress Reese Witherspoon placed her majestic Ojai, CA 7 acre Spanish style ranch (pictured above) on the market shortly after being featured in and on the cover of Elle Decor's 9/12 issue (pictured below)....  Recently, Witherspoon has reduced the asking price from its original $10 million to $7.25 million. Designed by architect Wallace Neff and built in 1923 for Edward Libbey (founder of the Libbey Glass Company in Toledo, OH), the property consists of a 4 bed/3.5 bath main house, multiple guest houses, pool, extensive landscaping, and stables. Click here for Elle Decor's photos of the breathtaking grounds and comfortably appointed interiors, designed by Kristen Buckingham.

Interior designer Kathryn M. Ireland was the previous owner of this historic property and she & her family were photographed on site for Vogue Living Fall/Winter 2007. I've held onto the images and included them below....

Happening this weekend at the Cobb Galleria, Friday March 15 - Sunday March 17, is the American Craft Council Show. This event is the largest juried indoor craft show held in the Southeast, highlighting the handcrafted wares - jewelry, clothing, furniture, and decorative accessories - of an exceptional group (over 200) of artisans. Tickets available here.

Included this year is a design exhibit titled Make Room: Modern Design Meets Craft in Atlanta....  Selected local Atlanta interior designers have been tasked with designing a 10X10 space inspired by the craft of a artist participating in the show....  I've featured a couple of pairings below....

Nicky Haslam -- Veranda MAR/APR 2013

During this past month, I keep coming across British interior designer Nicky Haslam in various publications....  First, he authored the intimate cover story on Lee Radziwll for the Spring 2013 issue of The New York Times Style Magazine (cover below)....  Next, I read in the MAR/APR issue of Veranda about his Hunting Lodge, an 18th century Jacobean Revival country house and soon to be released book (March 19th), Nicky Haslam's Folly De Grandeur: Romance and Revival in an English Country Housedocumenting the home's quintessential style....  Followed by Lonny's March issue, with an excerpt from his book and more photos of the home's interiors....  Photos below....  Plus, I've included a video of Haslam providing a tour of the estate's extensive grounds and gardens.

Mobile Mural

An opening reception for Chapel Hill, NC based artist Mary Carter Taub's lastest work, Mobile Mural, is happening tonight at Vimala's Curryblossom Cafe in Chapel Hill from 6-8pm. Taub, along with a selected group of local artists, have been put to the task of creating public art by a partnership between the Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership and the town's Public and Cultural Arts Office.

Taub has wrapped a transit bus with a bright colored collage of reinterpreted images from town maps (see Taub's sketches below).... The bus will be on view on its regular route for the next year.
