Juicy Jenny: Community Juicebar + Superfoods Emporium

Thursday, September 26, 2013

If you've clicked on the About tab at the top of my blog, you've read about one of my previous jobs in the last 10+ years was working for Jennifer Levison....  Souper Jenny as she is commonly known. When Jenn opened her beloved teeny tiny soup cafe in Buckhead, she completely turned upside down the typical business model to running a restaurant. From the get-go, she did everything her way, cooking the food she wanted, in a space she made feel like a cozy den, with photos of cherished family & dear friends covering the walls. Some of the lessons I learned after almost 3 years of working in the kitchen side by side include staying true to what you want in life, just be nice to people, and throw out the rule books & make up your own!

Jenn has continued to make her mark on the Atlanta culinary scene, opening up a second eatery, Cafe Jonah and the Magical Attic (named for her son), and most recently, opening Juicy Jenny: Community Juicebar + Superfoods Emporium, located a stone's throw from Souper Jenny's front door. I stopped in yesterday to check out the space & sample the menu.

Keeping in line with her known tradition, Jenn takes to labeling her juice bottles like she does her soups, with witty names and colorful descriptions -- Do I Have Kale In My Teeth, Beets Me Baby, and Bodacious Buzzzzz to name a few. She's also adding herbal immune boosters to her fruit & veggie juice recipes. Lisa Smith, a noted pastry chef and longtime friend of Jenn's (and mine) is handling Juicy Jenny's day to day operations and baking/creating the Vegan & Gluten Free baked goods offered. Pictures of the interior are included below followed by a video of Jenn, that pretty much sums up her passion in life - family, friends, and food. To be noted, Jenn is making her 9th appearance on the Today show this morning, sharing her recipes for fresh homemade juices & smoothies.

FOLLOW UP >>> Front Load Washers

Wednesday, September 25, 2013

About a year ago, I wrote a post on how our new front loading washing machine was developing a musty smell, and in turn, the odor was starting to seep into our (seemingly) clean laundry. When I Googled for more info on the topic, multiple pages are posted on how this is a common occurrence for front loaders.

At the time, I tried a couple of different suggestions for ridding the funky smell -- wiping the interior & rubber seal down, keeping the door open between loads, draining the machine frequently from the bottom corner filter, adding a specific washing machine product that "washes" your machine, etc....   Ultimately, I found that using Vinegar every few weeks in the detergent dispenser and running the machine empty, on the hot cycle, made the overall difference.

But, a year has gone by, and the smell tends to creep around....   In an effort to take a new line of defense, I've started adding a fabric softener to every load and that seems to be helping. I use ECOVER products for most of my other cleaning needs, so I've been using their Sunny Day scent fabric softener.

All this aside, I have been reading (check out Pretty Handy Girl's post & comments) that one minor well maybe major detail that isn't always made clear, is that Powder Detergent rather than Liquid Detergent should be used with front loaders. OK, this adds another piece to solving my puzzle....  I have forever used liquid! Putting powder on the grocery list and we'll give it a try!

BOOK REVIEW >>> Allan Greenberg: Classical Architect

Tuesday, September 24, 2013

I have a longtime friend to thank for connecting me with the opportunity of previewing an advanced copy of the soon-to-be-released, Allan Greenberg: Classical Architect....  My anticipation for receiving my copy continued to grow after watching a short video highlighting some of the book's featured designs paired with Mr. Greenberg providing the audio narration. The words he chooses to sign off with, "a house is made of walls and beams, a home is built with love and dreams", could not ring more true when taking in this spectacular retrospective of work.

From first opening to the final words, this 12" X 12" hardcover book is breathtaking. Each page is saturated from edge to edge with examples of both important residential & commercial projects (including original architectural drawings), with every image transcending a quiet beauty in line & form. I can safely say that not only will this text serve as a source of pure visual joy, but one that I will forever refer to for inspiration and application of classical design elements & details, a style standard that Mr. Greenberg has championed since opening his firm in 1972.

To be noted, the book's foreword has been written by acclaimed designer, author, and House Beautiful contributor Carolyne Roehm. She recounts her journey of working with Mr. Greenberg in recreating & restoring her historic 18th century Georgian-style Connecticut home (photo above) following a devastating fire that consumed the entire interior, leaving only the original stone walls standing.

Included below are two examples of completed architectural gems from Mr. Greenberg's portfolio, followed by the video I discussed at the top of the post. Allan Greenberg: Classical Architect will be hitting shelves on October 1....  I highly recommend adding this comprehensive masterpiece to your literary collection. // Pre-order is available here.

Krog Street Market

Friday, September 20, 2013

Took a turn around the being-constructed-as-I-type Krog Street Market in the Inman Park neighborhood this morning....  The renovation of this original circa 1920s factory warehouse (formerly owned by & served as movie mogul Tyler Perry's 12,000 square foot studio space) is slated for completion in early 2014. KSM is designed with an open loft like appeal, accommodating restaurant/retail space and with the addition of side-by-side "market stalls" offered in various square footage sizes (I'm envisioning something in feel to London's Harrods Food Hall or NYC's Grand Central Market). I've included below the current roundup of signed-on tenants, which are a nice mix of locally sourced food & retail purveyors, followed by the artist rendering of the completed look, an architectural drawing of the floor-plan, and my photos of the current site.

Harvest Moon

For the last 2 nights, the glowing Harvest Moon has hung in the clear sky like a giant & perfectly round dough ball, serving as the brightest of spotlights cutting through a midnight blue backdrop ....  Staring up at it I find myself humming the Neil Young tune....  Watch the attached video below & click here to read more about the moon's astrological symbolism.

UPDATE >>> Patchwork Style

Tuesday, September 10, 2013

Erika Bearman // Photographed at her home and featured in this month's Elle Decor, interior design by Miles Redd

I am adding 2 looks to my previous post on transcending Patchwork Style....  Fashion trendsetters Erika Bearman (above) and Laura Vinroot Poole (below) turn the tables on this classic design. Today's interpretations elevate the technique of stitching together an all-over mix of pattern into one that conveys a fresh & modern appeal.
