Chomp & Stomp 2013
Wednesday, October 30, 2013
Hey Y'all.... Chomp & Stomp is happening this Saturday, November 2! This annual Chili Cookoff & Bluegrass Festival is held in Atlanta's historic Cabbagetown neighborhood. Organizers expect this year to attract their largest crowd yet (20,000+), so I've included below a couple of details to note if you're planning on attending....
- The festival opens at 11am, kicking off with the Artist Market, music stages, and food/drinks from individual vendors will be available.... But the Chili is NOT served until 12:30pm.
- The Welcome Stations (found at various spots around the festival) sell the $5 spoons for you to hold onto & sample Chili from the individual cups provided by each Chili tent.
- Chili is submitted by both home cooks & local restaurant chefs, in meat & vegetarian options.
- The Chili goes FAST, so get close to your favorite tents around the 12:30 opening.
- Parking can be a little dicey too.... Street parking is available and some empty lots provide a flat-fee all day parking, but MARTA is recommended.
The B-E-S-T news of all, is that Mr. Ferguson will be part of Chomp & Stomp's Artist Market.... Our tent will be located on Kirkwood Avenue, just up from Cabbagetown's main park/site of the main music stage. Mr. Ferguson will be offering his abstract paintings, photography, and a custom designed T-Shirt. Come by & see us!
A Halloween Memory....
Tuesday, October 29, 2013
A standout Halloween memory for me growing up in my CT town involves a truly special house (pictured above) that played such a role in making the night spooktacular! This was the must visit house for trick-or-treating, not just with neighborhood kids, but people driving from all over to come and tour this historic home turned Haunted House for the night. You entered through the front door and were led through the rooms on the main floor, each one over-the-top decorated with everything HALLOWEEN....
The family that was responsible for this holiday extravaganza owned the home during the 80s & 90s. The Mrs. of the house transformed the original (and dilapidated) interior/exterior, setting the home on its new design path to what is seen today (among other design details, the front porch is new and a circular driveway at the front steps was added). A design element I always loved seeing as a kid, was the Dutch door design of the front door. This house is located around the corner from our former home and our families have remained great friends.
The home is currently on the market and the photos of the interior that I've included below are the rooms that were transformed for Halloween.... More info can be found on the listing here.

Jeni's Ice Cream + Atlanta Opening
Wednesday, October 16, 2013
This fantasticness happened yesterday.... From 2-4pm, Jeni's Ice Cream was offering free scoops in a selection of some of their fan favorite flavors -- Dark Chocolate, Salty Caramel, Bramble Berry Crisp, and Sweet Potato with Toasted Marshmallow. Jeni's Ice Cream truck was parked outside Dancing Goats in Decatur, helping to build the buzz around Jeni's first ever Atlanta scoop shop opening over on the Westside next week.... The "Open-to-the-Public Preview Party" for the scoop shop is happening Wednesday October 23, 7-10pm, and hosted by Jeni's founder Jeni Britton Bauer. Free ice cream will be offered in addition to a limited-edition commemorative poster given to the first 50 people in line. Photos from yesterday's ice cream truck visit below....
Missed out on Jeni's truck in Decatur? No worries.... Catch it today at The Fresh Market on Peachtree Street, scooping free ice cream from 3-5pm.

Blue & White at Auction
Tuesday, October 15, 2013
In anticipation for The Pink Pagoda's Blue & White Bash, I've pulled together a collection of Blue & White inspired decor recently sold at auction through Christie's - Contemporary Artwork, Chinese Ceramics, and Classic Furnishings. The bash is a blog linking party hosted by Jennifer at TPP. Her previous party included 70+ bloggers, all sharing their posts on Blue & White. The upcoming party is on November 4th.

Stephen Sills
Monday, October 14, 2013
The highly anticipated retrospective of work, Stephen Sills: Decoration, from distinguished interior designer Stephen Sills is due out on shelves next week, October 22. Mr. Sills' extensive portfolio has been featured in numerous shelter publications, but the launch of this book marks the premiere of his comprehensive collection of designs under one cover.
To be noted..... Mr. Sills' country home in Bedford, NY is featured in the October issue of Town & Country magazine. The images are shot by photographer Francois Halard (who is also the photographer for Mr. Sills' book and will be releasing his own body of work on November 19). You're in luck if you're house hunting & wanting to experience living a Stephen Sills designed home.... The residence pictured above is currently on the market. It's located in Southport, CT, an idyllic coastal hamlet nestled between the towns of Fairfield & Westport. The home and its interiors were featured in & on the cover of Architectural Digest's December 2010 issue. Listing info here + the AD cover and additional images found below.

ON THE MARKET
Friday, October 11, 2013
The owner of the much loved but now shuttered home store, Providence, is selling her duplex (entryway pictured above). Claudia Thompson's retail presence in Atlanta's Morningside neighborhood proved to be a stylesetting space that offered handselected re-purposed vintage furniture, chic accessories, and whimsical gift items. Claudia's ever changing window displays of her latest finds were always a street front highlight and invite in to peruse the store. Currently, Claudia continues to work privately with clients on interior design projects and you can also find her mix of vintage home decor at Aesthetic Factory, her boutique space within Paris on Ponce.
Below are images that I've kept from when the interiors of Claudia's home were published.... Plus click here for listing info.
A Nod to Design Style

Haven's Kitchen
Immediate first impressions of the home is how the space shares a design undercurrent with the interiors/finishes/furnishings (bold use of black, pops of yellow, subway tile detail, natural wood elements) of Haven's Kitchen (having had the opportunity to visit in December). But also, the overall style seems to be inspired/translate design cues from that of Jenna Lyons' former home in Park Slope (which was photographed for Domino back in November 2008). I've included below some side-by-side comparisons with Jenna Lyons' interiors and note the color palette, furnishings, and accessories.

*note the upholstery pieces, black & white elements, diamond motif rug, mirror & light fixture selections

*note the straight back side chairs, refinished hardwood floors are the focal point with no rugs added, and graphic art work hung on the walls

*note the dark walls, white headboard/bedding, and multi-arm chandelier

Lentil & Mixed Veggie Soup
Tuesday, October 8, 2013
It's a cool & cloudy day in Atlanta today, perfect weather for a pot of soup.... And the photo above, Lentil & Mixed Veggie Soup, is what I have bubbling away on the stove as-I-type. I never follow a recipe when it comes to making soup -- for me it just starts with a good heavy pot and adding ingredients & flavors of what I have on hand. Some things are always staples, a can of beans, a bag of baby spinach, and tomato (either fresh or a can), but today I added sweet potatoes & broccoli that I had left over from last night's dinner. I didn't have any stock for liquid, so I just used water, and let the seasonings (fresh cracked pepper and I prefer Herbamare over salt) and the mix of vegetables flavor the soup. I bring everything to a boil and then turn down the heat to simmer for at least 15-20 minutes.... I find that reduces the liquid a bit and allows the veggies & beans to marry together deliciously! I top my soup with a drizzle of extra-virgin olive oil or fresh grated cheese.

Emily Newdow
We took a quick trip over to Athens, GA yesterday to pickup some pillows that my friend Emily Newdow has been working on for me at her home studio.... Emily is the owner of Stitch 9 (and who I've written previously about here + here), offering handcrafted & custom pillow designs. Her overall style takes on a little bit of a playful twist in the imagery & fabrics (she hand-dyes her felt) she pairs together. Getting the opportunity to see Emily's studio was the icing on the cake to our visit! Within in her highly organized space, a bounty of colorful spools of thread are mounted along the wall, fabrics in a rainbow of color & pattern are neatly folded & stacked, various tools & supplies grouped together -- and all easy accessible and ready to be put to work! I've included some photos below.... You can check out Emily's pillows in the Athens area at Suska Doma & Community and upcoming craft shows (including the Big City Bread Cafe Holiday Market), online through her website, and contact her directly for additional info on creating custom designs.
