Trend Spotting: {Industrial Chic} Coffee Table

Restoration Hardware's Furniture Factory Cart $1295
It's 2010 and "Industrial Chic" has arrived.  When once considered one-off vintage objects and reclaimed wood furniture start to turn up on the pages of home furnishing catalogs ready for purchase, a style has evolved and hit the main stage.  For me, this all seems to have started with this (above & below pictured) coffee table....  a former rail cart transport, reconfigured to accommodate our entertaining needs.  Retailers - like Restoration Hardware and Pottery Barn - have caught onto this trend set into motion by designers with an refined eye.  This "reclaimed" style, that seems to have grown out of reworking vintage objects, has paved the way in forms of chandeliers, seating, tables, and accessories.

I have a fun story about first noticing this rail cart style coffee table...  3 years ago I had a small space at the antiques store, Kudzu Antiques, in Decatur, GA - click here - where I was selling my Mid Century finds.  At that time, a wonderful dealer whose space was next to mine, Paige Jackson, was selling these rail cart coffee tables.  A year or so prior, she and her husband had come across an old warehouse south of the Atlanta airport full of the tables and snapped up the whole lot from the owner.  These tables became her best seller, selling for around $450 each, and when one would sell, she had her stock to replace it.  Kudos to Paige for having the foresight to spot what became a sought after object and design trend.

This is a great piece that would change any room into a rustic decorators look. They sell these in Restoration Hardware for $1200. This is a early cart that was used in the factory's to move around heavy items. This has been completely restored and everything has a nice clean finish on it, but a old look to it. The wheels do move and the top is made of old refinshed rough sawn pine top. This table has a amazing patina to it and would be a great conversation piece. The top has many dings, dents, and other marks that give it a lot of character. The measurements of the piece are 51.5" long, 24" wide, and 14.5" tall.
