Forbes magazine has added Sara Blakely to their list of this year's World Billionaires. Blakely, the founder & sole owner of the Atlanta based hosiery & body sculpting garment company SPANX, is the youngest woman and self-made billionaire to be included in the ranks. She will appear on the cover of the March 26, 2012 issue of Forbes (as seen above).
When I was working at Souper Jenny, back in the late nineties/early 2000s, Sara was a frequent customer. Souper Jenny is so small that the kitchen and cafe seem to be one in the same, and customers were always welcome in the kitchen. One afternoon, while Sara was in having a late lunch and I was in the kitchen cleaning up from the day, we got to talking. She mentioned her hosiery idea (cutting the feet off of pantyhose), going through the patent process, and trying to find a manufacturer to take a chance on her product. Sara ended up giving me what was probably one of the first run of packages of SPANX out of the back of her car.
