Elle Decor December 2010/January 2011

2 weeks ago, my subject post was on a mountain home located in Ketchum, Idaho, crafted by the mother & daughters' design team of M. Elle Design.  I have my husband to thank for turning me onto blog design to inspire, who had previously featured the home's exterior & interior, highlighting a selected palate of refined furnishings and subtle colors.  This project is a family affair, the home is owned by M. Elle Design partner Mary Lynn Turner, as a getaway spot from their Newport Beach, CA home for her husband and 3 children to enjoy.  Daughters Marie & Emily split duties -- Marie serves as design partner to Mary Lynn, Emily rounds out the financial side, keeping an eye on the numbers.  Working with architect Bob White, the trio opted for a compound style residence, designing a total of 5 buildings positioned on the river side site, each with a purpose of form & function.  How fun to open our mailbox over the week-end and see the Turner's Great Room on the cover of the Dec 10/Jan 11 Elle Decor magazine, and read more about this close to the heart design endeavor.  Check out the images below and click here for my previous post on M. Elle Design.

Hable Construction + Hickory Chair @Hawthorne House

Hawthorne House

We headed over to Athens, GA yesterday afternoon to attend Hawthorne House's annual holiday trio of events, particularly looking forward to hearing Susan Hable of Hable Construction, and Jay Reardon, president of Hickory Chair, talk about their recent collaboration of Hable custom textiles for Hickory Chair furniture.  Hawthorne House is a wonderful home furnishings store in the heart of Athens, specializing in custom upholstered furniture pieces, with an eye for pairing those pieces with refined sophisticated antiques & accessories.  Each tastefully designed room of what was formerly a private home, features a selected palate with the right mix of the color and texture. Susan and Jay's talk was very informative, giving insight to the behind the scenes of daily operations at both companies and the process of seeking out weavers to create these newly designed fabrics.  You could see the excitement of both Susan and Jay as they discussed their successful partnership of bringing Hable Construction's custom textile design to Hickory Chair's quality Made in the USA furniture.  Check out the images below and the interiors of Hawthorne House.

Head over to Hawthorne House in Athens, GA on Sunday November 21st for their 'Annual Holiday Trio of Events'.  From 1:00pm-4:00pm, shop Hawthorne House's new arrivals for gifts & home furnishings and get inspired by their custom designed room vignettes, with their most recent addition, a series of children's rooms.  At 4:00pm, join Susan Hable (co-founder of the textile company Hable Construction) and Jay Reardon (president of Hickory Chair), as they lead a discussion on the collaboration of textile designer with furniture maker -- influenced by the recent partnership of Hable Construction custom designed fabrics for Hickory Chair. {Please Note:  Space is limited for this talk, so be sure to call Hawthorne House to reserve your spot}.  Rounding out the evening from 6:00pm-8:00pm is local cookbook author Gena Knox, on hand to sign copies of her most recent book, Southern My Way.  Not to be missed while mingling at Hawthorne House, delicious treats to munch on provided by Chef Peter Dale of Athens restaurant The National & Atlanta restaurant Empire State South.

I am super excited to hear Susan Hable speak....  she and her sister Katharine Hable Sweeney founded Hable Construction in 1999.  The business is based in New York City, but I've recently read that Susan has relocated to Athens.  Check out my previous post on the Hable sisters and see below a sampling of custom designed Hable Construction fabrics for Hickory Chair.

Thanksgiving Fare ~ Marilyn Monroe in Pilgrim Attire
{Image Found Here}

Almost 50 years after her death, Marilyn Monroe continues to capture our attention.  A recently published book, Fragments, neatly catalogs a haphazard collection of letters, poems, and bits of writings on loose paper, giving insights to her daily life.  Of their uncovered pieces, the authors included a handwritten Turkey Stuffing recipe dated from around the mid 1950s, listed with specific measurements & ingredients, particularly noting that "No Garlic" should be used.  Click here for the complete recipe from the NY Times and click here to read more from the article in today's Dining Section, recreating the recipe in a 2010 kitchen just in time for Thanksgiving.

An American in Zurich ~ Antiques Dealer Arthur Rooks

Tuesday, November 9, 2010

Originally from Jackson, MS, Arthur Rooks has been a resident of Zurich for 18 years.  He scours the city's famed flea markets in search of antique treasures, most vintage modern in style, and posts all his finds on his online website - Quintessentia - launched 6 years ago after a part time passion of buying & selling antiques and decorating apartments for friends turned full time international business.  Rooks estimates that 80% of Quintessentia's sales are with US shoppers, and offers very specific shipping rates & delivery times for his items to arrive at your door.  For more, check out the article on Rooks in the most recent NY Times Style Magazine's Design & Living Winter 2010 (found below) and click here for the link.

Fall Getaway House #2

Friday, November 5, 2010

For last Friday's post, I included images of a renovated Connecticut farmhouse, perfect to enjoy a week-end getaway during the Fall season.  Continuing my design inspiration for today's post, I have scanned images of a North Georgia mountain home, taken from my saved Cottage Living magazine (RIP), November 2006 issue.  Some of my favorite architectural details of this home, owned by husband & wife Markham Smith and Ellen Hauck, include the centrally placed 2 sided fireplace; the separate living & sleeping areas connected via breezeway; the abundance of natural light; and the selection of simple materials & finishes for the interior & exterior.  Check out below.

Week-end Happenings >>> Cabbagetown's Chomp & Stomp

Thursday, November 4, 2010

{Image Found Here}

Hey Atlanta friends, be sure to make time to stop by the Chomp & Stomp Festival on Saturday, November 6th, 11:00am - 6:00pm.  The Cabbagetown neighborhood, known for its historic shot gun style homes & side by side bungalows, plays host to this ultimate Chili Cook Off with local restaurants and home cooks entering their tried and true recipes - vegetarian options included.  The streets are shut down to cars and lined with tents for participants to dish out their creations.  There is a 5K race in the morning and live Blue Grass music is played all afternoon.  A $5 entrance fee gets you your spoon, your utensil for sampling as you make your way from one bowl to the next.  Be sure to get there early, this event tends to draw large crowds and the chili goes fast!

House Beautiful's 9 Part Home Renovation Series Comes to Completion

Monday, November 1, 2010

House Beautiful magazine's November 2010 issue wraps up their 9 part monthly home makeover column.  Over the last year, HB has followed homeowner Annie Selke, as she renovated a 1960's ranch house in Lenox, MA.  Selke, the owner and founder of Pine Cone Hill - a bedding & textile company known for vibrant designs - downsized from her 8 bedroom 1887 house in the Berkshires to accommodate a new chapter in her life.  Her desire for change was prompted by a daughter away at school and a recent divorce and she had little need for a big house with big & unused space.  With the help of architect John Gilmer, Selke gutted the interiors and re-worked the existing spaces of her newly acquired 1,800 square foot home in keeping with a 21st century lifestyle - finishes include a new kitchen, new bathrooms, new windows, and a raised roof line to allow for a 10' master bedroom ceiling.  Check out the before and after images below and click here for more info from House Beautful.
