East Meets West ~ John Erdos

I have a soft spot in my heart for Singapore....  I had the opportunity to move there following my graduation from college back in January of 1997.  My parents were leaving their home in Connecticut, and moving over to this tropical paradise for my Dad's job.  I happily joined them.

During my 6 month stay, my Mom & I discovered the greatest home furnishings shop that offered lovely Asian antiques and accessories, John Erdos Home. The back-story on owner John Erdos and the coming about of his business is an inspiring one.  A native New Yorker, Mr. Erdos was working for J. Crew in the early 1990s.  He was given a 2-4 year job assignment to set up operations for the company in Singapore.  Taken in by the wonderful antiques and decorative objects discovered while traveling throughout Asia, Mr. Erdos soon found himself buying a shipping container full of goods.  Running out of space in his apartment to accommodate all his finds, he soon took to having weekend furniture sales out of his home, with friends and expats loving his overall interior design style.  The success of these sales led to Mr. Erdos leaving his job at J. Crew and establishing John Erdos Home.

As the business continued to grow, in the early 2000s, Mr. Erdos moved his storefront from its original location to a "Shop House" retail space (a sort of historic brownstone style architecture common in Singapore), allowing for a 11,000 sq. ft. multilevel showroom feel, complete with interior koi pond.  In 2009, he raised the design bar even higher, relocating the business to a unique compound style setting of 6 former Army barracks.  Mr. Erdos re-designed and renovated the cluster of buildings to accommodate not only the Home retail needs, but also a Art Gallery and Cafe, overlooking a lush courtyard and tropical landscape.

With no formal design training, Mr. Erdos' innate sense of style serves as the inspiration for his custom designed furniture collections, crafted from sustainable materials.  Included below are a some of my favorites -- furniture & accessories -- from his current inventory.
