Katie Kime (pictured above) launched her eponymous lifestyle brand online in 2014, offering a selection of home decor, clothing and accessories, recognized for reinterpreting staple pieces with an infusion of color & character. Katie's unique style twist quickly gained a fan following and prompted the opening of her Austin, TX based flagship brick & mortar store in 2015.
I am drawn to Katie's eye catching prints -- classic motifs reworked in vibrant shades and bold scale with a hint of humor mixed in. Her prints translate seamlessly from home decor to fashion..... Keeping this in mind, I reached out to Katie for a little more detail on her process. Our Q&A below.....
Katie, could you expand on where you’re drawing your inspiration from for the design of your decor and fashion pieces. For example, your 'The World Is Your Oyster' print — there has to be a great story behind creating that design!
You know, it really comes from all around me. Oysters and Rosé at an outdoor restaurant is one of my husband and my's favorite things to do together. So hence the oyster print. A new one coming out next week I sketched while in Paris last week sitting at a cafe after seeing a beautiful painting of a woman. Traveling, eating, really the happiest parts of my life are often where the inspiration comes from.
You seem to have mastered a stylish twist of relaxed sophistication reflected in your pieces….. Is this an element that you see that sets Katie Kime apart from other lifestyle brands?
I think it is. There is a playful, cheeky component to our prints and colors that I think makes it more relaxed and approachable.
What is on the horizon for Katie Kime? Is there any upcoming design news you would like to share?
One of the more exciting things is our new office space in downtown, Austin. It's a beautiful cottage with big windows and amazing light that we'll office out of, host events in, and change and shoot the interiors of with new product. We also just brought on a new partner from Tory Burch and finished a large financing round. So we're excited about what's to come.
