My Cappuccino @Steady Hand Pour House

Here in our little Emory Village, a quaint pie shaped storefront is crafting the most delicious artisan espresso and coffee drinks. We have proprietors Jordan Chambers, Dale Donchey, and Jamie Pair to thank.  You can't help but be drawn into the coffee spell that this trio is capable of commanding, as you witness their cappuccino pouring finesse and brewing artistry.  Jordan, Dale, and Jamie are passionate about the process, from bean to cup, and taking it to the streets in their outfitted 1982 VW Van - Rattletrap ATL Street Coffee - complete with espresso machine and order counter.  For more info, follow on Twitter or check out Steady Hand's Facebook page, for their up to the minute news feed - morning coffee specials and their fresh baked goods for the day.  Click here for location.

Part of the Style Stratosphere :: Daphne Guinness

Daphne Guinness | Photographed for Harper's Bazaar, March 2011
{Image Via Here}

Born into a life of European high society, Daphne Guinness is the daughter of an heir to the Guinness brewing fortune and granddaughter of one of the famed Mitford Sisters, 6 fashionable darlings of their time from an aristocratic English family.  Daphne has blazed her own avant-garde path as part muse to legendary fashion designers and part artist - designing her own clothes & jewelry.  I am continually amazed not only by the forward reaching fashions and haute couture pieces that she wears, but admire the down right nerve with which she does it. Clearly, her look is not one that a typical woman can pull off, which is why if find her so appealing & interesting to watch.  Her deep friendships with renowned style icon Isabella Blow and fashion designer Alexander McQueen (unfortunately, both of whom have passed), led to magnificent fashion collaborations.  I loved reading back over the summer how rather than seeing Ms. Blow's insanely wonderful & personal wardrobe/estate go on the auction block (which included 90 Alexander McQueen pieces), Daphne privately purchased the entire collection, noting the importance of keeping all the designs intact.  This month, Daphne is featured in Harper's Bazaar magazine, and the interiors of her NYC apartment are photographed for Architecural Digest.  Check out more below, followed by video of Daphne in her home surrounded by her lavish designs.

Tastemaker >>> Donna Hay

Friday, February 11, 2011

Known for her distinctive culinary palate and a clean design aesthetic, Australia's own Donna Hay is a force to be reckoned with.  Having earned a reputation in her early twenties as a much sought after food stylist & writer, Donna became food editor of marie claire magazine at age 25.  Donna's sense of style has earned her a loyal fan following, and her success has cultivated her own self titled seasonal magazine, Donna Hay, multiple published cookbooks, and the opening of Donna Hay General Store in Sydney, offering hand selected pantry and home goods.

Scott McGillivray of HGTV's Income Property

Wednesday, February 9, 2011

HGTV (the Home and Garden Television channel) continues to showcase inspiring spaces, complete with head to toe renovation work and outfitted with polished style & furnishings.  Lately, I'm realizing all the shows I tend to make time to watch are hosted by Canadian designers & builders -- Candice Olsen, Sarah Richardson, Mike Holmes and host of my newest favorite, Income Property, Scott McGillivray.

Scott McGillivray, Host of Income Property

OK, yes, Scott is easy on the eyes, but he's not just a pretty face, he really knows what he's talking about.  Scott's personal experience owning rental properties coupled with his design/build/carpentry skills makes for an extremely informative show.  Income Property focuses on educating homeowners on the do's and don'ts of becoming a landlord.  Over the course of the 30 minute program, an apartment is renovated (typically a space in an existing duplex or triplex, where the landowner is residing in a portion of the residence) - brought up to both code/safety standards while incorporating a 2011 interior design style.  Scott is quick to point out that 2 key components of renovating rental properties are return on investment & sticking to the renovation budget, prompting him to make wise choices when selecting the apartment's fixtures & design finishes that reflect the asking rental price and will ultimately hold the greatest longterm value.  When the space is completed, and before a tenant moves in, Scott seeks out the opinion of a local appraiser to provide insight to the overall value added to the entire structure from much needed updating.

Creamy Delicacies for Your Valentine from Sweet Grass Dairy

Tuesday, February 8, 2011

Thomasville, Georgia's Sweet Grass Dairy is offering their Lumiere cheese (crafted in a heart shaped mold) as a delicious Valentine treat for your sweetheart.  Lumiere is a goat's milk cheese and is perfect to enjoy on its own with a glass of wine or as an accompaniment to salads and light fare.  Click here to order.

"Soft-ripened goat's milk cheese with French grapevine ash. Lumiere is our pasteurized, soft-ripened goat's milk cheese. Handcrafted in the style of cheeses from the Loire Valley in France, Lumiere is hand-dipped using small heart-shaped moulds. After salting, the cheeses are dusted with French grapevine ash to balance acidity. Carefully turned each day, Lumiere develops a beneficial mold on the rind that helps the cheese develop its creamy interior and clean flavor."

Toast of the Town ~ Ralph Lauren

Monday, February 7, 2011

The fashion designer Ralph Lauren continues to make an impact 40+ years after establishing his smashingly successful clothing and home furnishings empire. Recent highlights kicked off in the Spring of 2010 -- French President Nicolas Sarkozy presented Mr. Lauren with the Legion d'honneur (the highest decoration in France), followed by a celebration dinner at the American Embassy. Spring in France also welcomed the opening of a new Ralph Lauren store, his largest in Europe to date, and in-store eatery, Ralph's. In the Fall of 2010, the Lauren's NYC apartment was featured on the cover of Elle Decor, and continued news noted in Vanity Fair, Vogue, and Architectural Digest keeps us engaged throughout the Winter of 2011. Click here to read my previous post on Ralph Lauren, including photographs from the Lauren's home in Jamaica, featured in Architectural Digest 2007.
