OPEN >>> The Third Space

Monday, April 29, 2013

Asha Gomez, chef & owner of Cardamom Hill, has opened the doors to her latest culinary project, The Third Space. I've posted previously about Asha and the cooking class we attended at her restaurant last summer, where she mentioned her desire to create & offer a space that focused on all things food -- classes, chef talks, dinners, etc....  The Third Space kicks off its cooking classes May 8th, with a line up featuring local Atlanta chefs Joe Truex, Jenny Levison, and David Sweeney....  Interior images above & below of The Third Space -- Redefined Home Boutique has provided the furnishings & decorative accessories.

WABE + Trees Atlanta

Thursday, April 25, 2013

WABE 90.1, Atlanta's local NPR station, is in the midst of their Spring Pledge Drive....  I listen to 90.1 every morning for daily updates on news, traffic, and weather, and on the weekends to Car Talk and The Splendid Table. If you're a listener and interested in making a donation, today is the perfect day to pledge! Today only, Trees Atlanta has partnered with WABE to plant a 1 year old tree within the city for every pledge received. Since this challenge was created in 2010, over 6,000 trees have been planted with the hopes of gaining an additional 2,000 trees from this year's pledge drive. Lela Rose, with co-riders Stitch & Bobbin

A friend shared this photo of fashion designer Lela Rose from Bikenyc: New York Bike Portraits' Facebook page....  Lela was photographed last Thursday commuting around the city, with Norwich Terrier companions, Stitch & Bobbin (who happen to ride to work with her everyday). In addition to her storage baskets, Lela customized her bike with bright colored yarn wrapped throughout the frame.

Lela and Stitch were featured in and on the cover of the premiere issue of Matchbook in February 2011...  Plus watch the attached video below of Lela being interviewed about the inspiration for her Pre-Fall 2013 Collection....

Next Chapter >>> Steady Hand Pour House

Monday, April 22, 2013

In the wake of some beloved local coffee shops announcing the news of shuttering their doors, I am so very happy to hear that one of those shops, Steady Hand Pour House, will continue to remain open, but within a new venue....  The Decatur restaurant The Iberian Pig (located in the heart of downtown on the Square) revealed details last week of their upcoming partnership with Steady Hand. In an effort for patrons to continue to enjoy their handcrafted cappuccino and coffee, Steady Hand will operate a coffee shop within The Iberian Pig starting May 1, Monday - Friday from 8am-3pm (photo above).

Steady Hand owners Jordan Chambers, Dale Donchey, and Jamie Pair (who are arguably the hardest working guys in the coffee business) have been down quite a road over the years, as their Emory neighborhood based business has evolved into a thriving one (complete with loyal fan following), even with 2 Starbucks located a stone's throw from their front door. In addition to the retail coffee shop, the trio were the first to introduce a mobile coffee truck (an outfitted '82 VW van), Rattletrap ATL Street Coffee, within Atlanta's emerging food truck scene back in 2010....  Watch the video attached below for more insight....

Susan Hable Smith Puts Down GA Roots

Susan Hable Smith's Work Studio // Athens, GA

Super excited to see the Athens, GA home of Susan Hable Smith in the May issue of Elle Decor. I've posted previously about Susan here & here, highlighting the textile company she owns with her sister, Katharine Hable Sweeney, Hable Construction.

Added Treat:  Hable Construction is Offering 30% Off Tote Bags Happening Now Through April 25

Elle Decor features the interiors of the main house (spotting signature Hable Construction prints on drapery, furniture, and accessories) and the home's grounds....  The photo found above (of Susan and husband Peter's children, Bird & Lake), is shot in front of her work studio, a freestanding vintage farmhouse, located a stone's throw from main residence. I have been following the transformation of this space since Susan started posting the details on her blog in January 2012. She found the farmhouse in Eatonton, GA, split it in 2 and moved the entire structure to her Athens, GA property. Under the watchful eye of the Historic Preservation Society, Susan embarked on a top to bottom overhaul....  Photos of her design journey below....

I noticed on page A3 (upper right corner) of today's NY Times, an advertisement from Tiffany & Co. for their Great Gatsby Collection, from the 2013 Blue Book Collection. Pictured is the Savoy Headpiece with detachable brooch, designed in collaboration with Catherine Martin, and inspired by Baz Luhrmann's upcoming film, The Great Gatsby, opening in theaters May 10 (pictured above & trailer below).

Actress Carey Mulligan, who plays Daisy in the film, is featured on the cover and in the May issue of Vogue....  Photographed wearing selected pieces from Tiffany's Great Gatsby Collection....  Images here.

Custom Cup of Tea

Monday, April 15, 2013

This is just about the freshest way to make yourself a cup of hot tea....  Get this style teapot (photo below), with a metal coil strainer (one is also available on Ebay here). Add any combination of herbs/fruit to your liking to the pot (I've peeled the rind of a lemon, ginger root, & fresh mint leaves, shown above). Boil water and pour over your custom creation, allowing time to steep - the longer the time, the stronger flavor to your tea. Serve & enjoy!
I got my teapot about 10 years ago on a visit to my parents in Shanghai....  Mom took us to the sweetest of cafes, Ginger (read more from Sugared & Spiced here), that served different combinations of tea in this style teapot. I bought one from Ginger's teeny tiny downstairs pantry supply shop and have used it ever since.

Lilly Pulitzer

Iconic stylesetter Lilly Pulitzer passed away on Sunday at the age of 81. She has forever left her mark on the fashion world, designing clothing that bears her name in signature bright colored prints. Simple shift styles, originally crafted to appeal to tropical Palm Beach, FL weather and favored by the social set, Lilly Pulitzer's creations soon became the must have garment for women and girls everywhere.
